New 🎧: Speaker Hortman reflects on two decades in the Minnesota legislature, why Trumpism is such a bad fit for Minnesota Republicans, what she learned from losing her first two legislative campaigns, Jesse Ventura's legacy, and much more #mnleg https://www.publicnotice.co/p/aaron-rupar-show-melissa-hortman#details
INBOX: Minneapolis' #mnleg House delegation has come out in support of restoring a defunct public housing levy. The Mpls Public Housing Authority estimates it would cost $52/year for the median household. Total haul: $12 million/year
A proposed cemetery for "green burials" (no embalming, wood casket) near Moose Lake caused so much uproar that #mnleg enacted a temporary ban
In the process, lawmakers may have outlawed typical burials for Jews and Muslims https://www.minnpost.com/greater-minnesota/2023/07/minnesota-paused-green-burials-because-of-a-bitter-fight-over-a-cemetery-in-carlton-county-it-has-led-to-questions-of-religious-freedom/
This is in the context of Minneapolis Public Schools receiving only 78% of merely •adequate• funding for its needs:
https://www.mprnews.org/story/2023/02/15/how-minnesotas-school-funding-leaves-the-most-inneed-districts-behind
We’d need a 28% increase to reach adequacy. We got 6%. And COVID aid is ending.
So as amazing as the state legislature’s work on ed funding was, it’s look more like a lifeline than a Minnesota miracle.
Aha! Minneapolis Public Schools itself has answered the question that’s been burning for me ever since the legislative session ended:
The changes to school funding increase district revenue by 6.3%:
https://financeandbudget.mpls.k12.mn.us/uploads/fy24_operating_revenue_final.pdf
About 40% of that increase comes from the state covering 44% of the special ed cross-subsidy. (It should cover 100%, grumble grumble…but I’ll take the win here.)
#Crossbow legislation trending. Proposed #MNLeg aims to remove the age limitation for hunting with a crossbow during regular archery seasons.

Minnesota's the latest state to pass a 100% clean energy standard. I ask Haley Havens from the Initiative for Energy Justice how it measures up on equity (and how the #mnleg supplemented the bill with many other clean energy policies) https://t.co/D9uozNzK2D
"Working with a mere one-vote edge over Republicans, [Kari] Dziedzic ran the Senate for a few days from her hospital bed post-surgery, with an IV pumping drugs into her body during chemo and from her mom's house in northeast Minneapolis to avoid the stairs in her own home nearby.
"She captained her caucus through a session that included seismic shifts to the left on taxes, education, abortion, criminal justice, marijuana and voting rights." #mnleg #Minnesota

Parents just got this email from the school district.
Still marveling at what Democrats in the #MNleg managed to do with a one-vote margin.
One vote.
Not because they had a safety margin. Not because they expect to win again this way.
Because they vowed at the start of the session to leave nothing on the table, and finish with no regrets.
Mayo spreads the bread!
One billion is a nice start, but you did say four times the cost of the Vikings stadium, so 4 Billion. And there is no guarantee you will spend the 1.
Needless to say, after you bullied the #mnleg, we're watching! https://www.startribune.com/mayo-unveils-billion-dollar-expansion-in-rochester/600280259/

This article answers some of the questions I’ve had about just how good the MN Legislature’s good education bill was this session. Does it amount to…a hail Mary? a lifeline? a boost? a game-changer?
Well, educators seem pretty happy about it, and some people are using the phrase “Minnesota Miracle 2.0.”
Still no sense of the magnitude of the actual effect on my school district’s budget, but I’m hopeful.

Now that the #mnleg session is over, Wagenius appears on the @streetsmn podcast with @ianrbuck to discuss some of the transportation funding that was approved, and there's also a chat with Sam Rockwell. I remain very thankful for the way MN's Sierra Club has focused on climate issues in a way that's actually helpful @WedgeLIVE https://streets.mn/2023/06/02/legislative-session-wrap-up-2023/

For years, teachers "were lied to" about the way children learn to read, one #mnleg lawmaker said.
Now, the Legislature is preparing to pay schools to switch to new reading curricula with more emphasis on phonics, reports @CallaghanPeter for @MinnPost:

Mayo Clinic trying hostage-taking tactics, and the MN DFL legislator responses…
“I was surprised to see that email”
“It would have been nice to hear concerns after the bill was introduced in February. It’s not like it’s not been public.”
“…using their power and resources to block a policy that would make patients safer”
“I don’t respond well to ultimatums no matter who they come from”
For those who don’t speak Minnesotan, that translates to “💀💀💀”
