this moai - Hoa Hakananai'a - is incredibly important to the people of Rapa Nui. it is a moai carved not from the softer tuff so familiar from images of Easter island, but from hard basalt. more importantly, the back of the statue is carved with images of the bird man cult, the religion which replaced the #moaï worship.

to put it in perspective, if Luther, instead of Wittenberg, had nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of St. Peter’s in Rome, then Hoa Hakananai'a would be the equivalent of those doors and the original theses.

there is no justification for any of the looted objects to remain in London, but Hoa Hakananai'a is in a class of its own. the bird man cult defined later Rapa Nui, the statue needs to be returned.

This Moai is 1.60 metres tall and was found lying down on its side looking at the sky.

Moais.How did they get there?
It was a great question when we asked the local tour guide. The basic answer was this, though. They come in 2 basic pieces & the quarries are on opposite sides of the islands. It is thought that the statues were "walked" over by rocking them back and forth using ropes & many men. Each moai's face has been made to replicate a family member's face from an indigenous islander. It is up to the family to pass on the family story. #history #travel #moai #photography

Going out each night to take sunset photos was exciting at Easter Island...You always knew that the clouds were going to give you a spectacular backdrop to whatever you were going to feature...That particular night, I had a moai standing in the foreground. Moai or moʻai are monolithic human figures carved by the Rapa Nui people on Rapa Nui in eastern Polynesia between the years 1250 and 1500.
