I finally did it. I spilled an entire cup of tea on my "New Model M" keyboard from Unicomp. As expected, the liquid drained out the front of the keyboard, and the keyboard continues to function perfectly. Damn, this is a good keyboard.

@scruss It could be the beginning of an interesting conversation:
A keyboard from a different era found a new life in a modern device.
The keyboard is the of mobile keyboards!

The cable on my IBM model M gave up the ghost, and rather than hunt down a replacement for it, I’m wondering about replacing my chain of adapters (AT to Ps/2 to USB) with some kind of Bluetooth or usb replacement board. Anyone have a recommendation? I found the model H by @jhawthorn (modelh.club/) but I want something I can actually order today.

@kingu Only the is even girthier than the 122, and sadly those that do reproduce only do 65% layouts, not even 90% 105 key boards, so a can set you back like €500+ in excellent condition...

In case some of you love old keyboards, here's me in my oldbytes account going over cleaning and fixing two IBM Model M keyboards. They still feel and sound the best, but my desk is a bit small for me to keep using mine.

Part arrived early, cleanup complete and I was shocked by how well the cable for this 1991 Model M is still in great shape while my 1995 keyboard's cable basically disintegrated. Also, the controller board on the older model is much better made. I placed the faulty independent LED membrane on the picture - I may try to revive it in case the new old part fails.

Note: yes, the lower left "Alt" key was lost a long time ago. I'll probably swap it with one from my Lexmark Model M because I much prefer the older keyboard to be complete. Also, the right shift key lost a stabilizer, which I will also pilfer from the Lexmark. Unicomp sells them but I may design and 3D print it for the newer keyboard.

Two things:

1. Keyboard generally works, but the independent LED membrane has seen better days and is the likely culprit. Found a replacement on eBay and I hope it will work.

2. On the previous post's pic, there is a bit of blue at the lower left of the keyboard case; anyone has suggestions on how to remove hair coloring from 30 year old ABS plastic without damaging said plastic?

Finally had time to finish it up today, it now replaces my wife's Model M, one from the time IBM still made them not Lexmark like mine.

While it's been occasionally vacuumed, it does need a deep clean and the LEDs don't work anymore. I just need to find my good keycap puller again so I can soak all those keys and clean underneath. Once that is done, I'll take a look at the LEDs.

Update: The section of the keyboard membrane that goes to the LEDs is very fragile... especially when a cat decides it seemed like a neat chew toy when my back was turned. Time to reinforce the membrane with a space-age solution: tape. Then solder two wires from the controller board to the LEDs.

Removing the old cable was easy; to replace it I felt I'd just install a ps/2 connector directly on the keyboard and use a regular ps/2 cable. So I do that, solder the connector relatively easily and of course it didn't work. After some testing I had a fairly good idea of what I needed to do, but we were going to have major renovations in the near future and had to put a lot of things in boxes, including this keyboard. This was in *late* 2019.

As I was going through boxes earlier today, found my old keyboard and decided to spend a bit of time on it. After fiddling with wires on a mini breadboard, I noticed my earlier error - ground and 5v were in each other's place. See the pic for the "elegant" solution. Just need to fix the two wrong pins on the connector and I'm done.

Operation cleanup went fairly well. Opened it up, popped all keycaps and GOOD GODS it was waaay worse inside. Life probably evolved in there. Yes, there are pics, no I'm not showing them. Anyway, cleaned everything thoroughly and it turned out pretty well. 2/3

Way back in 2019, my trusty that we had for decades (was my wife's at first, but she had two and gained my eternal love by giving it to me) was not only filthy, but its cable was nearly disintegrated. I figured disassembling it to clean it and replace the cable was in order. I mean, look at this thing. Ew. (please ignore Star Wars bedsheets). 1/3
