Not only 2 modems, but 2 modem posts! Here's the inside of the Microcom Deskporte FAST modems from the last post.

Inside of the plastic case is coated in a brown conductive paint. The modem chipset is a Rockwell 288DPi, using what appears to be a Zilog Z80 to manage everything. The main difference between them seems to be where the components have been sourced from.

So since I missed #ModemMonday last week - Here's two modems!
This time, they're Microcom Deskporte FAST modems. One branded by Banksia (local Australian distributor for Microcom) and one only branded Microcom. I suspect the Banksia branded one is slightly newer, but not by a lot. The Banksia is marked "FAST +" while the Microcom is just marked "FAST" with a "tm" after it. I think this was simply a branding thing between these modems, though it's possible one of them has later firmware or different internals.
These modems supported MNP from level 2 right up to level 10. They even had a parallel interface, in case the serial interface wasn't up to the task of keeping up with the modem, though you'd use the serial port to do things like dialling, etc.

It's unfortunate that we must push for basics like this. This situation is bad in Australia because there are no #modems sold here that are compatible with foss firmware either.

People are becoming rufugees in there own country, without access to basic telecommunication.

Going to try and post a Modem Monday once a week (I own 30ish dial-up modems and a bunch of modem and comms related stuff).

Will probably post a bunch of computer restoration bits and pieces as they happen.

Repost from my other account: The CP+ Telecoupler II (there were a few brands of these on the market). You'd put it on a phone handset like an acoustic coupler modem, then plug the RJ cable into your traditional wired PSTN modem (an external modem, or say a modem built into a laptop), effectively making the pair into an acoustic modem. They had their own 9V battery inside to run all the bits so the wired modem thought it was actually connected to a real phone line.

When I got on #BBSes in the early 1980s, there was an omnipresent chorus of grumps insisting that the move from honest acoustic couplers to decadent #modems was the end of the Golden Age of telecommunications:

When I have some budget, I want to try to setup #soundcard #modems over cheap #USB interfaces using #soundmodem, try and establish a point-to-point #Wireguard connection to prove it's feasible.

And then add mobile phones in between.

In theory everything necessary is present, but the up-to-date devilish details would be good to have documented in a post less than 20 years old.

Over the past several years, i lost two #modems [i'm on the fscken super-crap #NBN #FTTN, with 700m of rotted copper from me to the node, hence top sync d/l speed available is a lousy ~34 Mbps, & ~9 up] during #thunderstorms [my my but those popping capacitors are surprisingly loud!]. Consequently i now do this constant dance of needing to keep a regular eye on the #BoM radar site, & disconnect my #modem every time another thunderstorm comes. There's a mountain right near my town hence via the orographic rainfall effect my area cops more than its fair share of storms anyway... & ofc due to our lovely #ClimateCrisis violent t/s frequency & severity are increasing.

In fact, §73 Section 3 of German Telco Law [ https://dejure.org/gesetze/TKG/73.html ] REQUIRES providers to allow customers to choose their #Modems [or whatever #CPE equivalent] with no discrimination and have to provide their clients with all the necessary parameters to do so when signing up.

The only exception are spectrum violations and damages caused by it being non-compliant with mandatory standards.

From what I heard from close industrial sources, Apple’s 5G modem is ahead of schedule. There’s still a chance it might not show up until next Gen iPhone SE (which by the way, scrapped the iPhone mini design, so mini on iPhone is officially dead, it will be larger sized) in 2024. But if the Qualcomm modems aren’t up to Apple’s standards, it may release the new modem this year.
