It's a tradeoff. My parents bought their first fridge used, in the late 60s. It was 15-20 years old at the time. Two family moves later, it went down to the basement as the "2nd fridge". They finally got rid of it, still working, in the late 90s.
But in 1950, it probably cost 2-3 months of the average workers' wage. It's a small fraction of that now.
I think there was a sweet spot for price/durability, probably in the 80s.
