How does #tropical rainfall get partitioned between #land and #ocean? We can measure this partitioning, but that doesn't mean we understand what controls it.
#MPIM_Scientists Luca Schmidt & Cathy Hohenegger built a conceptual #model to investigate just that. They find that the ratio between land and ocean #precipitation is mainly controlled by the efficiency of #moisture transport in the #atmosphere, and less so by land surface processes.

When #heating, air movement keeps the air from stratifying, leaving a cold layer near the floor that makes your feet feel like they're freezing.
When cooling, it also does that, but in addition, moving air is better at evaporating #moisture from your #skin, which increases the cooling effect of that #evaporation.

Most homes are still heated with #oil. To prevent bad #airquality and #moisture build up, you have to vent by opening #windows, meaning loosing the #energy put into heating the home. Mechanical #ventilation with #heat #recuperation is rare.

A study last year found in nearly 4 out of 5 years between 1981-2019, half or more of all atmospheric rivers that affected the state were part of an atmospheric river “family,” or a rapid parade of storms.
Warmer atmosphere’s increased #capacity for holding #moisture is reason enough for California officials to prepare.

The amount of topsoil moisture rated short to very short is highest in Nebraska and South Dakota at 89% and 88%. The value for the contiguous US is 50%, which is considerably higher than the previous 7 years. This is the last USDA issuance of moisture values for 2022.

One measure of drought conditions used by scientists is based on the level of #moisture in the soil as measured by #satellite imagery.
We have compared these dry conditions over the past three months to average conditions since the beginning of this century, to build up a picture of how #extreme recent #weather patterns have been.
