Pictures Considered #58: Visualizing Introns
by Christoph
By reading sequences we easily detect stretches that code for proteins. We detect promoters, transcription factor binding motifs, start/stop signals for transcription, signals where introns are removed by splicing from primary transcripts (pre‑mRNA) to yield mature messenger RNA (mRNA), and much more. It wasn't always so easy.

The Biohacky hour continues to give us a place to discuss all issues around DNA assembly and SynBio work.
Join us Wednesday 4th of April for an informal chat about all of your cloning woes. And maybe get some useful feedback from people who have had similar problems before.

I am the lead #forensic pathologist for the BC Coroners Service, as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology at UBC in Vancouver. I have a PhD in #biochemistry and #molbio. My research involved studying development of peacemaking and conducting cardiac myocytes using #stemcells. Although I am no longer in the lab, I enjoy collaborating on research involving cardiovascular pathology and sudden death.
I play cello, piano, and saxophone and especially enjoy jazz and chamber music.

Good discussion with a colleague on how we write about #biology to lay audiences, and how we may need to do more to generalise knowledge of molecular biology. E.g. a better general understanding of RNA, what it is, and how it works might’ve done wonders against vaccine hesitancy. We have some fantastic physics communicators in the mainstream, in TV and in popular science publications, maybe we should try to get more cell and molecular biologists there too? #SciComm #MolBio #CellBio
