Updating Horizontal Gene Transfer
by Mechas and Roberto
We recently prepared a lecture that included a brief discussion of bacterial evolution. Of course, we covered horizontal gene transfer (HGT), which we consider a key pillar in the evolutionary process. We dutifully began our presentation by listing, perforce: transformation, conjugation, and transduction.

Does anyone know of any good pre-doctoral fellowships for first to second year PhDs (that is, pre candidacy/dissertation)? , , and options are also welcome. Thanks.

Chemotherapy is a life-saving treatment for many cancer patients. Unfortunately, many cancer drugs also cause cancer cells to mutate, which over time leads them to become more aggressive and harder to treat. Molecular Biology and Biochemistry researcher Mani Larijani is exploring new ways to address this problem: sfu.ca/science/news/2023-news/

🔬 In recent years, scientists have developed sophisticated tools to look inside living cells in ever-finer detail. However, these images are generally frozen in time and capture only a slice of the dynamic and messy reality.

📸 Kyoto University researchers have developed a method to visualize cellular dynamics down to the level of single molecules.

Determining antibiotic resistance in bacteria is rapidly becoming a necessity in hospitals and disease research labs around the world.

Swedish researchers have developed a rapid test method to determine if a sample of bacteria is resistant to a specific antibiotic within 5 minutes of exposure.

Based around sequencing the 5' ends and their decay in mRNA, the tool is rightfully named 5PSeq.

@ct_bergstrom Yes is evil! Universities teaching advanced Biology are indoctrinating the young generations with all those promoters and enhancers. It's all Jacob and Monod's fault. Only Elon can save us...

In Genetics, Immunology, etc, one of the most influential journals in the world is CELL; a paper in cell can make a person's career

IMO, the color palette in cell's pdfs is hideous

and no one cares, or dares to speak up cause if you get blackballed by cell, that is a bad thing for your career

or maybe scientists are just color blind, literally or figuratively

Pictures Considered #58: Visualizing Introns

by Christoph
By reading sequences we easily detect stretches that code for proteins. We detect promoters, transcription factor binding motifs, start/stop signals for transcription, signals where introns are removed by splicing from primary transcripts (pre‑mRNA) to yield mature messenger RNA (mRNA), and much more. It wasn't always so easy.

The WHO estimates that antimicrobial causes at least 700,000 deaths per year, and this number is growing.

Researchers at SFU's Omics Initiative are working to identify pathogen-associated genes in disease-causing bacteria in order to better understand how bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics, and find opportunities for new treatments for bacterial infections.
