New article out in #Paleoceanography & #Paleoclimatology where we (Chris Maupin & myself) briefly recount how scientists have sought to understand past year-to-year (#interannual) temperature variations in the marine realm: https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1029/2023PA004723
Mainly focusing on coral-derived records, we also highlight a recent article by Ong et al. (2022; https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2022PA004483) who add a new #coral genus to the #paleoclimate toolkit.

Thing I learned today:
"Scrape marks left by limpets, Aber Rhigian"
These fern-like scratches fanning out across a large boulder at the foot of the cliffs are created by the radulae (horny, tooth-bearing tongue-like structures of #mollusks) of #limpets as they feed on algae.
The material of which the "teeth" are made has been found to be stronger even than spider silk.

I vowed on Jan 2 to share a painting a day, from my archive, but then I got deep in to a new painting of banana slugs, a couple of happy little guys I met on Vancouver Island last summer. Hereβs how itβs going, much more to do. Acrylic on polytab.

Climate change is causing oceans to become more acidic, which can weaken the shells of shellfish. The issue has researchers investigating Indigenous sea gardening techniques as a way of mitigating the impacts on clams and other wildlife. Great to see #SFU marine ecologist Leah Bendell working on this with stewards from the Tsleil Waututh Nation. https://hakaimagazine.com/news/clamshells-face-the-acid-test #sfuscience #marinebiology #clams #mollusks

My #firstpost on #Mastodon:
π π I am an Earth/climate scientist at the University of Arizona in #Tucson (southwestern US) focusing on the areas of #climate change, #paleoclimates, and #paleoceanography, with an emphasis on #ENSO, #monsoons, & #variability.
βοΈπ Our group uses #inorganic #geochemistry incl. measurements of #stableisotopes & #tracemetals in #carbonate rocks & #fossils (e.g., #foraminifera, #mollusks, & #speleothems) alongside climate #observations as well as #simulations to advance understanding of how the Earth's #climate & #oceans have changed in the past and can change in the future.
Some of my hobbies include:
π΅ #music: I am a fan of #metal and heavy music of all sorts, but tend to migrate towards #black, #death, #doom, #drone, #sludge, & #thrash. I also have a soft spot for #carnatic/#hindustani #ragas, #darkambient, oldschool-ish #hiphop, #triphop, and various forms of #electronicmusic.
π¦ #birds & #birding #photography bring me joy. Right now, I feel v lucky to be briefly back in my hometown of #Bengaluru, southern India, after three long years being able to see #oldworld birds I grew up with.
π¨πΎβπ» #GTD, #mindfulness, #organization, and (vs?) #producivity are things that I enjoy thinking about. Of late, I've been using #Things3, #Streaks, #Hobonichi w a #Lamy Safari, #Obsidian, #Overleaf, & #Bookends to get things done.
ππ½ Thanks for reading!
