#MonaLisaAndTheBloodMoon könnte ein Horror-, XMen Film oder Drama sein. Ganz sicher war er schräg. Die Story war nicht tiefsinnig aber auch nicht oberflächlich. Der Film erzählt viel, hat aber oft wenig zu sagen. Er war nicht schlecht. Auch nicht gut.

Ein total unterbewerteter Fiebertraum, in dem ein Mädchen mit Superkräften aus der Psychiatrie entkommt und im Nachtleben von New Orleans untertaucht. Stylish, brutal, aber zugleich überraschend warmherzig inszeniert Amirpour Junkies und Misfits, denen die Heldin auf ihrem episodischen Weg begegnet. Jim Jarmusch ist hoffentlich grün vor Neid.

Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon (2021) by Ana Lily Amirpour. How did this stylish, brutal yet wildly optimistic and deeply humane journey through the neon-lit New Orleans nightlife get overlooked? A girl with superpowers escapes from an asylum to hang out with junkies and misfits, while the authorities try to hunt her down. Dreamlike, beautifully shot and just incredibly cool. I bet Jarmusch wishes he'd made this movie.
