I'm actually just kind of in love with this picture. I have tons of photos of monarchs, closer up and grain free in tighter crops and tack-sharp detail.
But this one.
This has got to be one of my favorites for being so delicate and timeless and simple, like heirloom lace.

While I naturally like my own images, I don't usually print a lot of my own work unless it's a #muse 'hero' image that takes a lot of labor and creativity to make. This is one of the rare times a simple, non 'muse' image really makes me fall in love.

A neighbor down the alley has *the* monarch and pollinator oasis in his backyard. So many mating pairs and butterflies of all kinds flitting around! I am always so pleased with my own native pollinator patches in my yard, but his was another level.
Over the weekend I got his permission to pop into his yard and take some photos so now that I've got some days off, I'm looking forward to being a little shutterbug there for the next couple days.

I've seen a lot of folks recently posting photos of their #monarchbutterfly caterpillar enclosures and most look like the enclosures are indoors.

This is a #PSA to help get the word out:

Indoor raised #monarchs are more likely to develop and spread disease to wild populations, AND are significantly less likely to successfully fly south for the winter.

"Being exposed to an indoor environment with artificial light, constant temperature and top choice of milkweed provided by their captors they do not develop the environmental cues needed for pre-migratory behaviors."

Please please do your part to help boost populations the way nature intended, with planting milkweed and doing what you can to protect food sources monarchs need, fully outdoors. Plant native (to your area) nectar sources and please spread the word to others so their efforts benefit the ones we're trying to save.

There was mention of cutting the lawn so I decided to check the mini lawn milkweed shoots on the off-chance there were any eggs. Twelve (!!!) eggs later, I guess I'm back to raising some #monarchbutterflies.

Just left googles campus where they have a little patch of #milkweed (maybe 5 square feet) and just that was absolutely THRONGED with #monarch #butterflies.

It was honestly magical and really amazing just how little it took.

Every year, between November and March, millions of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) migrate from Canada and the USA to overwinter in the mountains of Central #Mexico. There are six designated “sanctuaries” in the States of Mexico and #Michoacán, which can be partly visited and each one of those nature reserves can host between 7 and 20 million butterflies, depending on the year. It is a real wonder of nature.

This is all part of a move towards #sustainability & #permaculture
