I expected it to be easy money with a hint of moral regret, and it was.
What I didn't expect it to be was a crash course in all the free-to-play upsell texts to come ever since...

Before being allowed to translate for Square-Enix, they REQUIRED you wrote a piece of fan-fiction about one of their characters, magically transported into the modern world.

Lazy jerk that I am, I wrote a thing about Drakengard.

Because of course it had that exact scenario as one of its endings (that's Yoko Taro we're talking about here)

And because I had localization-tested that. The game was so crazy for its time that SQEX didn't even publish it in Europe: Take 2 did 😄

We had MONTHS AND MONTHS of time to translate Cuphead.

The wordcount wasn't high, and it was never going to make a huge profit, but I always loved animation so wanted to go the extra mile.

So I reached to our closest contact with animation: a cartoonist we had used for our promo materials years ago.

She replied a few days later to say she couldn't help us directly, since she was hiking through Mongolia!

Funnily enough, we found out most of the Star Encyclopedia was a clunky translation from a Spanish fansite, so we retranslated from that behind the scenes.

And most memorably of all, we had to awkwardly warn that the dates of their zodiac signs were wrong. You know, in their Astrology game 😅
