Wonderful drawing (from 1848) of the 0-6-0 locomotive St David, built in 1830 by the Tredegar Iron Company for use on the Sirhowy Tramroad.
It was the first of a small fleet of locomotives designed and built by TIC Chief Engineer, Thomas Ellis Jr. St David was a development of the 1829 locomotive ‘Britannia’ built by Robert Stephenson & Co

Despite the Western Valley line’s overwhelmingly industrial character, Lloyd devotes most space to stations, with the focus firmly on passenger services.
However, some images reflect the major freight facilities which existed such as those located at Rogerstone.

Fascinating reading the notes for the 1865 Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company timetable for the Eastern Valleys (which ran from Newport through Pontypol to Blaenavon).
For example if there is no brake (break) van the guard is required to travel on the last truck. A second guard, if present, would then ride on the middle truck! Wonder what the Health and Safety Executive would make of that today!

Historically, the railways of Monmouthshire showed a marked diversity in the terrain they traversed!
This is well represented in the photographs collected in this book.
It is perfect for simply dipping into at random!

A charming little book which gives a good impression of the variety found in the old railways of Monmouthshire.
Sadly, though some ‘lost’ lines lasted well into their era, there are no diesel images.

How the railways of the old county of Monmouthshire (roughly modern day Gwent) used to be.
Sadly there are no images for diesel locomotive enthusiasts. despite some 'lost' railways (to mines etc_ lasting well past the steam era.

The junction of the LNWR line (coloured red) to Merthyr with the GWR Newport to Hereford line (coloured yellow) at Abergavenny is the subject of the left hand diagram of three on this 1903 Railway Clearing House diagram.
The difficult nature of the route of the Heads of the Valleys line up the Clydach Gorge to Brynmawr is already apparent in the tight curves from the start!
