I know that, in the Anglo-Saxon sphere, movies haven't been overly innovative the last quarter of a century. Fear and self loathing, that thing.

But the cinematic world is bigger than the Anglo-Saxon sphere, much larger than the writings of Freud and Jung.

Something is rotten in the state of movie critics.

@oligneisti There was nothing really new, except perhaps the Jungian angle, about Campbell's "Hero's Journey". The same ideas had earlier been put forward by Alfred Nutt (1856-1910), Lord Raglan (1885-1964) and Otto Rank (1884-1939). By selecting which parts of a story to fit to the and which to ignore, it could fit almost any story.

The main problem with Joseph Campbell's Monomyth is that it comes packaged with Jungian pseudoscience of the "collective unconscious" and innate archetypes. Readers often assume that these ideas inseparable from the Hero's Journey.

Campbell was a Western chauvinist who dismissed stories from other cultures that did not adhere to the Monomyth. When we include those stories we can see that his claim of universality is patently false.
