The less you pay to produce a product, the cheaper you can price it.

When a company has a lot of seller power, we call it a monopolist. When it has a lot of buying power, we call it a #monopsonist. No one ever made a bestselling, family-destroying board game called "#Monopsony" so most people haven't heard of the concept.

About 2/3 of the way through listening to the audio book version of #ChokepointCapitalism by @doctorow and oh baby is it good.
Listening to how companies have been able to combine #monopoly and #monopsony to capture buyers and sellers has been a real eye opener.
Highly recommended.

Also just recently finished reading #RedTeamBlues by same and my only complaint is that I finished it in 48 hours and wanted more.

Increasing the #minimumwage to 15 dollars an hour or more has large positive impacts on #employment, not only on low wage earners but also on mid wage earners as well… more jobs and higher wages across the board.

If you see out-of-date economists arguing that increasing the #minwage kills jobs, replace their words with “I believe the earth is flat” because their claims are just as incorrect.

The major player in bondage fees is (ironically) a Toronto-based company called #FirstService, who operate through their subsidiary #PlannedCompanies to enshittify apartment buildings on a massive scale. The workers organized by SEIU 32BJ have filed a complaint against Planned over these bondage fees:

Since every competitor is also selling through an app store and either paying a direct app tax or ceding margin to the mobile duopoly as a condition of selling in their in-house, pre-installed stores, they all have the same incentive to raise prices.

Economists call this the #monopsony problem (or, since we're talking about two companies, a #duopsony or #oligopsony problem).

Most of us have #AmazonPrime. Seriously - 82% of American households! Prime users only shop on Amazon. Seriously. More than 90% of Prime members start their search on Amazon, and if they find what they're looking for, they stop there, too.

If you are a seller, you *have* to be on Amazon, otherwise no one will find your stuff and that means they won't buy it. This is called a #monopsony, the obscure inverse of #monopoly, where a buyer has power over sellers.
