The Platy-Project is hoping for a lot of participation in September (it's like the Great Aussie Bird Count, but for Platypuses).

If you have a local waterway (and are in Australia), head on over an join in.

"As the weather cools down, things heat up in the echidna world.

It's mating season — and the monotremes have a unique and lengthy courtship, a game of follow the leader that the "last man standing" wins.

"I call it echidna bachelorette," UNSW PhD candidate Georgia Badgery laughs."

"You’re a mammal. So is a kangaroo. We’ve got much in common. But one of the most interesting is we all feed our newborns with milk. The word mammal comes from mamma, which is Latin for breast.

In Australia, we have many placental mammal species, like bats and native rodents. Humans are placental mammals too. But our country is far better known for our marsupials and monotremes, which have different reproductive strategies to placental mammals.

Monotremes are the only mammals to lay eggs. When an echidna egg hatches, the baby is very underdeveloped. Marsupials, too, give birth to underdeveloped young. When a wallaby gives birth to a tiny pink joey, it’s the equivalent to us giving birth to an eight week old foetus. Most of their development happens outside the womb or egg."

Wallaby joeys and platypus puggles are tiny and undeveloped when born. But their mother's milk is near-magical theconversation.com/wallaby-jo

Some believe that the duck billed deer is . Who am I to say?

About the size & white-spotted golden brown colouring of the S. American pudú deer or the Javan mouse deer, this rarely seen tiny deer-like quadruped of the Southwest Pacific is not in fact a deer at all. The unexpected duck-like bill is the first hint that this is perhaps not a regular ruminant mammal.

A rare albino echidna has been spotted in central west NSW.

The echidna, christened “Raffie,” was seen wandering around by a staff member of Bathurst regional council.

The council has released pictures of the rare mammal it says “is just too beautiful not to share” but is warning locals to be considerate:

"If you see Raffie out, please feel free to take a couple of snaps but do not approach, touch, or try and contain him. It is important to leave wildlife alone, as you could risk them losing their scent trail or leaving young unattended in the burrow. Of course, if you spot any injured wildlife, please contact WIRES."

Imagine finding food by sticking your nostrils in the dirt. That's the life of an echidna.

There are a few around at the moment, and each seems to have a different technique. This one shoves its snout in the ground and moves its head about in a way that remonds me of a doctor performing liposuction.

We set a trailcam pointing at a hole next to the driveway for a few days, to see if it was a burrow. Nothing used the hole but there was lots of animal activity. Here's photos of and#echidna . Masto only allows 4 photos but there were also a and

We've only been at our place for 12 months, so I thought I'd post the most exciting/interesting things we discovered in 2022.

Thing #1 We have 2 species on monotremes. Echidnas and a playpus.

If an echidna sniffs your shoe, make sure your feet aren't too close together as it's likely to try and squeeze its spiny body between them.

Nice surprise on this morning's stroll. Only the second time we've seen a platypus in our creek.
