"À la fin de janvier, le Montreal Gazette a appris qu’il devrait supprimer une dizaine de postes dans sa salle de rédaction, soit près du quart de ses journalistes. Une décision qui remet en question la survie même du Montreal Gazette fondé en 1778, selon des employés."

In the #MontrealGazette this morning, I see a new #Léger poll. "Does everything feel broken?": 67% agree (around 30% strongly), 25% disagree. Women agreed a bit more then men, the young more than the old. Top issues: #inflation , #HealthCare, #housing , jobs/economy, #environment / #ClimateChange .
Those are strong headwinds blowing against PM #JustinTrudeau .

The Astor Restaurant was opened by George Gavaris in 1924 on Montreal's St. Catherine Street.
In 1978, the Montreal Gazette's Stephanie Storey (link in next post) said: ”Now the Astor serves all kinds of food from scampi and snails to pizza and spaghetti .... The Astor’s strawberry tarts, filled with pure cream, are made by two pasty chefs in a separate fully-equipped pastry kitchen on the third floor.”

"In terms of mother tongue, for example, it is true that the proportion of French speakers slipped from 80.9 per cent to 77 per cent between 1996 and 2016. However, the proportion of anglophones also decreased, from 8.3 per cent to 7.5 per cent. No, the shift from French as a mother tongue has been toward “other” languages, that is, the mother tongues of immigrants."
