"Montreal Cool and Quaintly Interesting" (1935-1958) Artist: Roger Couillard [Source: Archives Canada]
This is the third in a thread of vintage posters for Montreal's tourism industry.
In my memory, a shift in advertising took place after Expo 67 with more emphasis on Montreal's cosmopolitan modernity, and with Quebec City being regarded as more historic or "quaint".

Visit Historic and Gay Montreal (1935-1958) Artist: Roger Couillard [Source: Archives Canada]
Montreal has long been known as a relatively LGBTQ-friendly city though I presume this use of the word "gay" didn't have our modern connotation. The article below talks about Montreal's 20th century historic gay scene, and a sad incident from as early as 1648.

Two disgruntled young ladies stare into the camera. And who can blame them? Can you image ice skating or snowshoeing in those voluminous dresses đ

This is St. Nicholas (although I think he looks more like an elf) by wood engraver John Henry Walker.
Walker was Irish and immigrated to Montreal in the 1820s. His illustrations appeared in many of Quebec's periodicals in the 19th century but he struggled to have his prints or wood engravings taken seriously as "art".

This old-fashioned Santa Claus with a toboggan on his back and snowshoes on his feet is drawn from the Christmas 1894 issue of the Montreal Illustrated.
Christmas is a great time to remember that snowshoes and the toboggan were first developed by First Nations peoples. Without these gifts, the first settlers would have struggled even more to overcome Canadaâs harsh winters.

Santa Claus arrives in a biplane!
This newspaper clipping shows the American aviator Cecil Peoli landing his Baldwin biplane in Montrealâs Fletcherâs Field in 1913.
Tragically, Peoli had learned to fly only one year earlier but died in an aviation accident only 2 years later after his landing in Montreal.

This horse and sleigh âdistributing the Christmas mail in Montrealâ is from the weekly Montreal Standard (1905-1951).
It reminds me of my father's memories growing up in Montreal's poor Point St. Charles district in the '20s and '30s. He used to reminisce about how he would run along behind a horse drawn cart grabbing any pieces of coal that might fall off of the back.

Here's a cheerful Christmas illustration!
Father Time (with a scythe a la Grim Reaper) greets Santa Claus who's accompanied by children from around the world.
It's from Quebec's "Le Monde illustré" (1893) and the caption says "Le bonhomme Le Temps souhaitant la bienvenue à Santa Claus et à la nouvelle Année".

Cordnerâs Cafeteria âA real good place to eat"
This #VintagePostcard depicts Cordnerâs Cafeteria which was located near what I knew in the â50s as Morganâs.
The 1930/31 Lovellâs Directory states that it was located at 1203 Phillips Square. The manager at that time was R.L. Cordner, so it looks like it was a family business.
Would anyone know the model for that car? Or the range of years?

The Astor Restaurant was opened by George Gavaris in 1924 on Montreal's St. Catherine Street.
In 1978, the Montreal Gazette's Stephanie Storey (link in next post) said: âNow the Astor serves all kinds of food from scampi and snails to pizza and spaghetti .... The Astorâs strawberry tarts, filled with pure cream, are made by two pasty chefs in a separate fully-equipped pastry kitchen on the third floor.â

1/3 The first of Quebecâs St-Hubert Bar-B-Q restaurants opened in 1951 on Montrealâs St. Hubert street. This postcard is from the 1960s.
Other businesses đ Wah Mee Restaurant, Mantovani, Bella Dry Goods, Millerâs Coupons, Midtown Shop and Pistilli's.
Youâll notice something surprising. Even though Quebec is a majority French-speaking province, at the time most of the signs were in English which is not the case today :)

"It's a must to visit DUNN'S when in Montreal"
This is my vintage postcard of Montreal's famed Dunn's Delicatessen which was opened by Myer Dunn in 1927.
At the time of this postcard (1963) Dunn's boasted of being the "Largest air conditioned delicatessen restaurant" (in Montreal I presume).
Dunn's is best known for its smoked meat and cheesecake.

Montrealâs Kon Tiki Restaurant, 1959 postmark
The Kon Tiki Restaurant was all the rage when I was growing up in the 60s. It seemed extremely âexoticâ since few people had travelled abroad to what we called âexoticâ places. It was all jungle plants and fruity drinks with umbrellas.
Of course, as I look back now, I realize now that this was a stylized view of the Polynesian world as seen through non-Polynesian eyes.
