Ended up using the free Moon+ Reader app for Android on my ageing tablet. Took multiple annoying steps to get the books loaded, but once they're there it's a nice reading experience with a lot of options to tweak. Will probably get the paid version after finishing the first book.

You have to REALLY want to avoid Amazon and other walled gardens to put up with it, though. 😬
