#OTD in 1909: A 52-year-old fruit farmer in #DanburyCT was shot to death at his home. The shotgun killing was immediately linked to the #Morello #Mafia organization and to the earlier #BarrelMurder in #NYC.

#OTD in 1902: #Brooklyn boys heading to the shore for a summer swim found the body of "Joe the Grocer," a nearly beheaded #Mafia murder victim. Authorities were later informed that Joe the Grocer was killed in order to protect the #Morello - #Lupo #counterfeiting operation.

I've just added Giuseppe Morello's #AtlantaPrison file to the #MafiaHistory website. #Morello was the U.S. #Mafia boss of bosses at the time of his 1910 #counterfeiting conviction. An original sentence of 25 years was commuted to 15 and reduced to about 10 for good behavior. During the 121 months he was behind bars, hundreds of pages - relating to family, letters, visitors, health, legal appeals, criminal activity, etc. - went into the file.
