However, this kind of "pelting the surface" has also been observed to encourage other rain to join in, like lemmings forced off a cliff.
Shouting at the clouds to either "let it rain!" (during dry spells) or to "give up!" (during wet spells) is an exercise in futility.
My conclusion has been to refer to my umbrella consistently as "a rain prevention device", and to mowing the lawn as "a rain dance".
