Being labeled “gifted” when you’re young leads to an absolutely *massive* case of “main character syndrome”.

Even now, 44 years later, it is extremely hard not to divide the world into “me” and “everyone else”. This is not egotism, it’s just a mental habit ingrained in me from those first days when I was called “special”. I have decades of experience mitigating it out, but it’s still my brain’s default setting.

They all meant well, back then. They really did.

Here’s some language pedantry for you: thanks largely to the computer industry, we use “version” and “revision” interchangeably. In actuality, “version” should refer to different variations that can exist in parallel, while “revision” refers to an update that supersedes the previous work.

What started with some good intentions — protect people from malware and bad actors, create curated app stores, provide continual updates — has become a cage dictating what you can do with the hardware you own, all while corporations siphon every bit of data they can from you to analyze, repackage, resell, and now, to train LLMs in an attempt to replace you with something cheaper.

It has to be stopped.

The ongoing war against general computing — the war to stop you from owning PCs, tablets, phones, etc. that you can use as you see fit, without being locked down to hell, stuffed with ads and spyware-as-a-service, and rented to you piecemeal — scares the everloving shit out of me. We don’t even need totalitarian governments, because we have totalitarian megacorporations instead.

(And I say this fully aware that I’m posting from an iPad, one of the worst offenders.)

Was thinking this morning that maybe I should at times channel my parents saying "cállate la boca" to me, (ya know within reason, cuz I have 🔥 that isn't likely gonna be extinguished...anyway...), because maybe sometimes the better response to something is just to ask "why?" and not rattle on about some perceived injustice.
Yes, I know some smart ass will "why not?" but hopefully more people think about their footprint/impact.

I’d love to see #Mastodon (and/or clients like #Ivory) provide the feature to… I’m not sure what you’d call it, actually. It would let you put a certain person under a persistent “content warning”, in the case where you might not want to block/mute them, but they have the tendency to post non-CWed stuff a lot.

Maybe you could call it “screening” or “blurring” — something like that.

Idea: a pet selfie station.

Pressure plate, mirror, camera, and treat dispenser. If the pet sits down on the pressure plate, it takes their picture and uploads it to Mastodon and dispenses a treat (if enough time has elapsed since the last treat). The pet soon associates the action with the treat, and *bam*, you’ve automated the most important part of the internet: dog and cat pics. 😆
