This vibrantly colored Calico Paint Caterpillar caught my eye; it is the larval stage of the Brown-hooded Owlet Moth

There are three temperature scenarios in which I always choose NOT to run fast:
Hot, cold and anywhere in between.

Today’s snailing is brought to you courtesy of the words HOT, SLOW and LIGHT EMERALD MOTH … mothing being my other hobby … and had nine of these delicate little green flappers visit overnight.

Plenty of egg box roosting in the moth trap overnight. Catalogued, photographed and safely released to carry on their mothy business. Some of the nicer ones included:

1) Feathered Ranunculus
2) Nutmeg
3) Grey/Dark Dagger
4) Silver Y

Hunting for moth caterpillars (cats) is fun. Challenging, but fun.

So that should these lifeforms, some of which we can not even identify beyond the very basics of what modern taxonomy makes allowances for (yet), ever go extinct, we will at have least known they existed. And having known, look. And look again.

Until we find them tucked away in a hidden glade somewhere. Or perhaps in the parking lot of our own apartment complex, amongsr that unsightly cluster of 'weeds' we pass by daily.

Overwhelmingly large numbers of are little studied - either unknown, or overlooked.

And yet these organisms which quietly going about the business of playing invaluable ecological roles in the ecosystems they inhabit, not only enable these ecosystems to thrive, but also improve our own quality of life. Especially in the cement souled concrete orgies of our 'big' cities, and townships.

Even in such places as crowded public parks and gardens, thronging with visitors.

Bombycinae Genus indet. sp indet.

This small wild Silk Moth photographed at an urban park in is so nondescript that it can only be identified to sub-family.

And this is why the smaller majority - the invertebrates, matter!

Because there's so much more to wildlife than just the megafauna, and so many places where we may discover it. (1/3)

Thing about these thick caterpillars is it takes a moment to figure out which direction is which.

The night was sultry…
And it brought all the moths to the garden.
Here are four beauties:

Moths are also fascinating to shoot.

"There are about 160,000 species of moths known to science. Compare that to 17,500 species of butterflies.

Moths vary enormously in their size, what they like to eat, how they reproduce and how they live their lives."

Lovely Canary-shouldered thorn (1&2) came to visit last night. Love the vivid yellow head. Compare to the plainer, slightly stubbier … but just as cute … Dusky Thorn (3&4).

James W. Truman featured in the New Yorker. A warm, lovely piece on his career studying insect metamorphosis, from moths to flies and mosquitoes, and the role and impact of hormones on insect development and behaviour—motivated by his latest work mapping the fate of neurons from larva to adult through pupal stages, and addressing an old question: do associative memories persist through metamorphosis?

Probably my fav moth seen - though rare - is the Gold Spot. I’m looking out for it as September approaches. I did get a pic of one last year, as you see. It has a great name. Plusia festucae - presumably bec it looks like a rich jewel (as in Greek ‘plousios’, rich) & likes a habitat of tufted-grass (festuca).
It also likes damp habitats, exactly as my garden is now after weeks of rainy days. 🌧️

a very unusual and disappointing year for monarch butterflies. i didn't see a single adult during the summer and have found no eggs or caterpillars. instead the milkweed plants are being denuded by a contingent of milkweed tussock moth larvae.
