Our paper "Prior movement of one arm facilitates motor adaptation in the other" is out @ .

We show that the direction of a prior movement of the other arm is an effective cue to allow adaptation to interfering force fields. The brain seems to use kinematic information in learned sequences involving different body parts to adjust movements of the same sequence.

Also our data is pretty.

Does anyone have experience with sensorizing a leg press to measure forces online (eg using a load cell)? Please let me know.

New paper published in Cell Reports

Meirhaeghe et al. show that, when preparing two movements in parallel, motor cortical activity reaches an intermediate preparatory state in between the states associated with each movement planned separately. This intermediate state constitutes the optimal initial condition to quickly execute either one of the two movements.

How can we adopt tools to study human , , and ? Some past studies in and have employed AI:

1) Seifert et al. 2013 use method to study climbing.

2) Morais et al. 2015, uses clustering method to assess learning in swimmers

In a recent paper, Kuuspalu et al., showed that oral intramuscular nerve cords have a super interesting and unexpected geometry. As in the figure, they extend proximally bypassing two adjacent arms (1).

As far as the functional, computational or behavioral advantage of such a morphology, the authors do not speculate too much. Can’t wait to see more about it!!

Yet, although flexible and with a potentially unlimited number of degrees of freedom, tentacles control shows that the octopus “employs a vertebrate-like strategy, temporarily reconfiguring its arm into a stiffened, articulated, quasi-jointed structure” (1).

Right after a paper on trunk (masto.ai/@aledaus/109546782372) here is another gem on the control of tentacles in the !

But first, few older bits. Arm & multi-arm coordination do not require major brain regions (!), indicating the importance of local feedback and peripheral connections (i.e. 1,2).

any pointer to some small "neural net" code to replace/setup/control PID element in motor control loop ?
I was thinking of motors that could counteract physical irregularities of materials that tend to lead to use super heavy energy wasteful machines to have clean cuts, while smaller one could just "adapt" speeds in a non linear way based on some sensors (position or video) ...
any idea?

New review on “The evidence against somatotopic organization of function in the primate corticospinal tract”

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/365751

In contrast to established ideas (Foerster, 1936; Bell, 1970), they show extensive intermingling of corticospinal outputs from different cortical regions

Text book explanations of the motor sequelae of incomplete spinal injury, are still based on a supposed corticospinal somatotopy
