It's happening again. Red buds going green. Hawks mating. Creeping myrtle and daffodils popping. Peepers. One of the dogs got skunked.

Springlike and yet, still a way to go till equinox.

Open doors and windows. Ladybugs emerging from their hiding places, escaping the confines of the house. The fresh, vibrant hint of green creeping back into the surrounding hardwood landscapes.

Yes, it's early.

It's been early for as long as I can remember. Hard to imagine it not being early. Early compared to, well, outside of my memory of time, early compared to the remnants of the old icehouse across the gravel road. Down the mountain there's evidence of a shallow ice pond. How long since the early warmth overwhelmed the deep freezing of ice for harvest and storage through the hot Virginia summers? Was it before Bomb Cyclones?

There's still enough cold through the fall and winter for endodormancy and ecodormaacy of the fruiting plants. They survived December's Bomb Cyclone. Deep freeze. Not enough to freeze the James or Rockfish rivers, though. Not enough to make ice. The question now, the early question is will we get a cold snap after the bloom? Doesn't happen often, lately, but it's a possibility. So much depends on the timing of the blooms and the changing climate.

This is a picture of a budding kitchen pear tree. You can see Potter the Great Pyrenees in the photo. He and his sister Beatrice do well here, even in the harsh August heat. Turns out their double coats protect them from the heat as well. But they sure enjoyed the Bomb Cyclone. Gave them the zoomies.

Virginia. Above the James at Howardsville. Above the Rockfish at Mount Alto. Spring is ahead of schedule. *Possible* we've passed last frost. One of the Pyrenees got skunked the other night. Spring. Red Hawks air battling, mating. Spring. Daffodils. Reliably early. Spring. Peas are going to be early this year.
