The central peak of the crater, known as both Mount Sharp and #Aeolis #Mons, is believed to hold many clues to the past of Mars.
The crater also holds features that may be evidence of being formed by flowing, liquid water.

"The rocks near these attempted drill holes have a rippled texture that was created billions of years ago as waves flowed upon a shallow #lake. Despite having climbed through thousands of feet of lake deposits, #Curiosity had never previously seen evidence of #water and waves this clear. The #discovery came as a surprise because this region of #MountSharp – the 3-mile-tall (5-kilometer-tall) mountain Curiosity is climbing – is thought to have formed as #Mars’ climate was growing drier."

The #Curiosity rover took a photo of the "#Kimberley" formation on #Mars from a distance, which shows the strata in the foreground sloping towards the base of #MountSharp. This indicates that there was a body of water present before Mount Sharp was fully formed. The photo was taken using the Mast Camera on 580th #Martian day, or #Sol, of the mission and has been modified to adjust the lighting so that the sky appears light blue.
