I thought of an ending!! The researchers were completing their time travel machine - they jump just in time to land later THIS year, and inspire* everyone to [redacted so I don’t end up on an FBI list].

It’s a race against time - as soon as enough damage has been done to change the course, the timeline will no longer lead to development of the time machine.
