Interesting #vox article about human #behavior in public places. A lot of blame is placed on the #pandemic, but I have to wonder how accurate that is. Disruption at #movietheaters for example was an issue well before the pandemic with people using their #phones at full brightness.

Sometimes people can pretend like they are interacting with the characters. Almost every picture has been a victim of bad lighting.
I think that these cinemas could spend like 20-30 minutes putting up well placed lights that would help people take good photos which then they could post to social media. Free (almost) marketing.

More than 11,500 people signed a petition started by the nonprofit that urges the city to include the existing seat configuration as part of the theater’s historic landmark status. Critics spoke out at a community meeting in August, some holding signs and wearing shirts that spelled out “Save the Seats.”
“Ripping out the seats is like ripping out the heart of that place and pissing on the ghost,” said Marc Huestis, a filmmaker who has organized more than 50 events at the theater, which he called a “sacred place.”

One reason is that many of those Avatar-era projectors are still in service and showing their age. In 2020, Sony announced it was exiting the cinema-projection business and recently ended support on the models used by major chains. This was especially problematic because those machines have a known liability issue, an analyst tells Digital Cinema Report: “The ultraviolet light from the projector’s lamp slowly destroys the imaging device, and the projected image loses color. The solution is to replace the imaging devices once or twice a year.” But that’s an expensive fix, so not enough theaters do it.
Digital Cinema Initiatives, a joint venture between major film studios, recommends that commercial theaters project their films at a minimum of 14 footlamberts, a standard of brightness roughly equivalent to the amount of light that would be produced by 48 wax candles per square meter of screen space. One maintenance technician, who asked for anonymity while criticizing the theaters that employ him, told me that some places with old Sonys are getting as few as six footlamberts.“

Thursday night I'll be going alone cuz my gf isn't the Marvel fan boy that I am, but she, I, and a friend of mine are going the following Saturday. I got AMC A-List specifically for when cool superhero/sci-fi movies come out cuz I like the theater experience enough to go alone and with others. The COVID/Streaming years taught me that you just can't beat imax with the convenience of streaming.

Seriously AMC? I loved going to their theaters and the prices of movies were the same regardless of which seats you pick and besides we picked the seats ourselves.
