Two new studies illustrate how the breeding behaviors of cuckoos and Daurian redstarts co-evolve. Redstarts move their nesting sites closer to human settlements to protect their nest against brood parasitism. Cuckoos use an egg matching strategy to find the optimal host nest for their eggs.

Can parrots remember their own actions? Researchers of our institute in collaboration with Loro Parque in Tenerife have found first evidence for this type of memory. The researchers trained blue-throated macaws to repeat different commands in different intervals. The study showed that parrots can remember their actions, which is an important prerequisite for self-representation and episodic memory of birds.
