Sanchiz et al, 2023: Air sampling at Madrid gay clubs found #monkeypox virus (#MPXV) DNA in sex rooms and bar areas. 57% of 7 samples collected at the peak incidence of #MPX had >100 genomes per meter cubed. Samples were not tested for infectiousness.

21 people were infected by the virus which causes monkeypox after visiting a tattoo parlour in Cadiz, Spain, between 6-19Jul2022 and having a piercing or tattoo contaminated by MPXV, the virus responsible for monkeypox disease.
Reported on 14Dec2022 by the The New England Journal of Medicine.
The disease was renamed mpox on 28Nov2022 by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
