Multisexual lesbians, or mspec (on the multisexual spectrum which includes bi, pan, omni, ply, & more) are simply people who experience queer attraction to women and also experience attraction to more than one gender. Since we're not TERFs around here, we get that there are basically infinite gender possibilities, so that shouldn't really blow your mind or make you angry (2%). And if you're saying "THEY DON'T EXIST" (3%), then you're already on the TERF train to fascism town. That's eliminationist rhetoric.

Mspec was kind of an unfortunate choice for an abbreviation because the counterpart is monosexual. Monosexuality, like heterosexuality and being cisgender, are the default in USian society. Some people negatively purely out of that kneejerk "I'm not straight I'm normal" reaction, but those folks get over it pretty quickly. There are also people out there who react with frothing, irrational, sometimes verging on violent rage at the concept of lesbians not necessarily being monosexual.

"Let women have this one thing," they say, and "You're going to make men think they have a chance with lesbians, which results in harassment." Sometimes they say "you're invalidating me." If you've paid any attention to TERFs and homophobes (but I repeat myself) then you'll see similarities between them and these exclusionary LGBT gatekeepers, often called exclus for short. Trans women are said to invalidate the womanhood of cis women just by existing. Trans women are going to allow men access to lesbians, resulting in harassment. Etc. But just like trans women have been there, not just in but building and shaping lesbian culture, so too have multisexual queers. Some of us are lesbians, get used to it. (I'm not, but some are. I am a dyke though.)

There is actually a lot more to say, about how the policing of the borders of womanhood is always an exercise in white supremacy because the dominant model of gender was devised by white supremacists who thought that the delineation of gender roles according to binary sex was a feature of superior, complex civilization. But since I accidentally erased ~1000 words before, I'll leave it for another time.

Saw someone claiming that #lesbianism is the sole attraction to non-men and that #mspec and #bi #lesbians are not valid. Let’s unpack that.

First and foremost: #gatekeeping labels suck. Period. Don’t do that. Otherwise you’re just an asshole. Don’t tell people how they have to label themselves just because your definition of a labels differs from theirs. Labels are not holy grales that have to be kept pure at all cost. What do you gain from it? Nothing but misery. A definition can never cover 100% of one aspect. Never.

Furthermore: non-men is not the hot take you think it is. It’s forcing #genderqueer people into a# binary that may not fit them. It’s plain #misgendering and reduces #inter, #agender, #genderfluid and #nonbinary identities to a “third gender”, to women lite. Hell, fuck off with that. Eww. I’m not woman lite. I hopefully don’t need to explain why it’s hurtfull to think of those identities as a “third gender”.

What’s wrong with mspec lesbians? If they’re attracted to women then why can’t they label themselves lesbians? Your own #gender has nothing to do with your sexual orientation.

What’s wrong with bi lesbians? There is not one true definition of lesbianism and there are lots and lots of lesbians in history, who are/were attracted to different genders as well.

Rest assured, another person will always know themselves and therefore their labels better than you will ever be able to.
