The North Cascade Glacier Climate Project began in 1983 to identify the response of Washington's North Cascade glaciers to regional climate change. In response to a "high priority" request of the National Academy of Sciences, "to monitor glaciers across an ice clad mountain range", not just one glacier. On July 30 we begin our 40th field season. Over the next four days in post and stories I will share images from the first 39 years of fieldwork, a decade at a time. #climatechange #mtbaker

The light string specs say that it's "suitable for wet locations". It still works, so I guess it's kinda waterproof. Water resilient?
I'll have to draw a line on the side of the bulb with a Sharpie and see if the level changes over time.

DAY 14. Mt Baker, Washington, USA: 1980
‘Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.’*
I spend most of my time sitting in front of a computer. The days are unmemorable. But my memories from 42 years ago when I did a solo trek up Mt Baker are crystal. As I drove up the switchbacks to the trailhead I was disappointed that it was a cloudy day. When I put on my backpack I was having second thoughts as I assumed I’d be camping in the cold and rain and not have any views. But I was determined to ‘climb that goddamn mountain’. Before long, I walked through clouds and poked my head through the top of the clouds and got a magnificent view of the summit of Mt Baker and the Coleman Glacier and the setting sun.
*Incorrectly attributed to Jack Kerouac. It was used in a review of his book, The Dharma Bums.
