I’m going to repost this old shot of mine and give a shout out to #amtrak. Amtrak still has the most ridiculous deal in travel: a 30-day 10-leg pass for $500. You’ll see our incredibly beautiful country in a whole new way. I did it back in 2004 and it was really life changing. I also ended up at a bar in LA getting drunk on wine with the guy who wrote Sideways while on the trip, so bonus. #travel #train #mtshasta #photography #rail

If you're ever near Mt. Shasta/Weed, CA, be sure to check out the Black Butte Center for Rail Culture. It's really cool, especially for those of us who used to ride freight trains.
I was last there in 2017. One of the not-to-miss sights is the 1926 water tower across the tracks. Dating from the steam train era, there are old hobo tags from the 1930s carved into the wooden base. It's nice to sit there and imagine...
