I wrote about the making of this 1:12000 scale model of Mt Whitney that I cut out of Birch plywood on a CNC router: https://www.grwster.com/projects/2022/mtwhitneymodel
My wife and I met climbing Mt Whitney and this was my present to her for our 25th Anniversary.
Here it is with its bigger brothers on the USGS map of the area.
The 3d print is 1:48000, half of the map scale, and took a little under 2 hours to print.
The smaller cnc cut birch plywood model is 1:24000, same as the map scale. It took about 2 hours to cut.
The larger cnc cut birch plywood model is 1:12000, twice the map scale. It took about 8 hours to cut.
Still learning the etiquette around these parts and it seems an #introduction may be in order. I’m a #retired #IT professional, #computer enthusiast and motorcycle hoarder. I used to balance the stress of work with racing #motorcycles on the weekends, hence the handle. Retired to the #EasternSierra near #MtWhitney where I enjoy my #4x4, #Gaming and occasionally #MetalDetecting. In recent years I’ve used that bird app but seeing how things are going, it really felt like the time to make a move.

I was documenting my progress over on the bird site before I moved. Here are some of the photos.
It's cut from four layers of 3/4 in plywood. It pushed the limits of my cnc and had to be cut in two parts. I cut the bottom half first and then glued on the top half and cut that in place.
I generated all of the gcode myself, with python, from the usgs topographic data.
