@jrcarpenter Should I get to tag along with a mudlarker this fall (PLA has suspended new permits) I would hope to find just such a coin,…and a few clay pipes…and something Roman… #Mudlarking #mudlark
🔁RT Lara Maiklem FSA - Mudlarking (London Mudlark) :
SPOT THE FIND… can you spot the 18th century, boot or garter buckle before I pick it up? During the 18th century, it was fashionable to wear long, close fitting boots which were strapped and buckled below the knee in order to prevent them from falling down.
Considering this coin has been in the Thames mud for 250 years it hasn’t worn down too much! Find a lot of #georgian coins whilst #mudlarking but never tire of seeing them laying on the surface.

It’s only January, but this may well end up being my #mudlarking find of the year: a miraculously mostly complete Roman cup. A less common form. Now having its contents x-rayed at the Museum of London. #mudlark #archaeology #romanbritain #history

Venus’ bottom - part of a Roman figurine of the goddess of love, sex and fertility, AD 43-200. It washed in front of me yesterday while #mudlarking on the river Thames. #mudlark #archaeology #history

Today I came across what I believe to be a human jawbone #mudlarking on the river #thames. I’ve emailed the FLO & alerted the police. They’re sending a unit round. I hope we might be able to find out some information about this lost soul… [A valid permit is required to #mudlark]
I love this 🧵 from Lara - I didn’t know that many bollards are ex-cannons 😯
But I’m more surprised to learn that there’s a Twitter account especially for #bollards! @WorldBollard@twitter.com 😲

A spot of streetlarking. Two late 18th century cannons on a London street. They were once street bollards so it’s unusual to see both ends… read on 1/4

I plucked this bartmann jug neck c.1550-1700 from the mud of the river Thames yesterday. Is anyone able to shed any light on the beard tie/ribbon/ring? #mudlarking #mudlark #archaeology #history https://t.co/8ACTAPLaPP

This upper section of Roman bone hairpin washed into my hand this morning whilst #mudlarking on the river Thames: the first to hold it since around AD 150-400. #mudlark #archaeology #romanbritain

A quaint little fragment of pottery picked up on the Thames this morning at low tide. A cat on a bike observed by another cat (I think it's a cat anyway!). Does anyone recognise the design? #mudlarking #mudlark

Where are my #mudlarkers at? I miss seeing the fascinating discoveries.

I found this fragment a few years ago in the sea near a ancient temple on a Greek island called #aegina. I knew it was something but only when a saw the little animal in a museum a few years later did I find out what it was.
Dating back around 3400 years it was a fragment a Mycenaean terracotta bull. Swipe to see one sold in Christie’s and the crap photo I took.
Amazing to see the colour has lasted so long.
