Today’s coffee mug here at work: my best friend and battle buddy in Iraq when deployed there in 2004 these days is a bourbon writer based out of the Louisville, Kentucky, area. Fred Minnick’s the name and almost 10 ten years ago, he got me started on a bourbon appreciation journey. In moderation, of course.

The coffee mug of choice today is one I picked up years ago when I worked for a Deere dealership in Kansas. Was there for about seven years, first in the parts department and then back to service administration. While employed there, I developed the habit of acquiring toy tractors, this one, an 8870 four wheel drive, a Christmas gift for my son Ryan in 1995 or ‘96. After he was KIA in Iraq in 2006, I took custody of it. It’s here with me in the office each day.

The coffee carrier here at work (at least, for this first part of the morning): a carry out cup from Great Northern Coffee Traders in Minocqua, Wisconsin, filled with some “foo foo” coffe, white chocolate mocha. Of course, I also just had to get a blueberry muffin and chocolate chip muffin. It’s in a Dixie cup that has Sustainable Forestry Initiative on it and the plastic lid goes into the recycling bin when I’m done with it.

I’m at the office today, the official observance of New Year’s Day in the U.S. and it provides an opportunity for the first cup pic of the new year: another item I picked up at a model train show in Minneapolis a few years ago. It was about the time a newly restored Union Pacific “Big Boy” was to tour parts of the U.S.
