During #FirstWorldWar men would often go to extraordinary lengths to save the lives of the horses and mules that they served with. This was partly because they became increasingly valuable to military authorities but also a result of the strong bonds between soldier and equine. This photo by John W. Brooke shows

It’s #MuleMonday so here’s one from my collection. You’ll note these guys have a hunter clip - whilst this helped reduce risk of mange it was a double edged sword, as it contributed to heavy equine casualties in spring of 1917 (which was very cold and wet) #WW1 #FirstWorldWar #MilitaryHistory #Histodons @militaryhistory
