it was complicated, yes
by Herod's decree

but really
couples fleeing persecution
to bear a child
happens every day

it doesn't
make the papers
some might even
consider it with scorn

yet god saw in it
such wonder

and sent a son
to mark the occasion

we hope
it may spark
unexpected love
this hanging green
and party rule

perhaps it can

but notice too
those keenly aware
of its location

muttering in protest
against public displays

slowly forming
bonds of shared affection

our savior's birth near you

reassuring early believers

neglecting heaven's call

Christmas stockings
Hang ready for Santa
Sing songs of warming festive cheer

Warming festive treats

sweet smells fill the air
as grandma's gentle spirit
shepherds family
away from distraction
to gather smiling
around the table
whispering through aroma
we are one
we are one
we are one

Wreaths hang from street lamps

we hang them
because amidst such dark
tiny lights are not enough

its first glints reminding
of eternal green
life's renewal
beckoning hope
past years of slumber

Sleigh bells jangle quietly

sleighs themselves
now rarely seen
but crystal clear
their bells sound
horse driven jangles
echo in memory
a joy so pure
echoed anticipation
of wrapped
connection

the store bought gift
(a tie!)
is fine
and packaged in all the finery
of modern industry

but only made
beautiful
by the crumpled wrappings
of five-year-old hands

The babe and the star

true, the event
is hope's redemption

but let's remember
she just gave birth
sinful worlds make colic
and the child sleeps
at long last

let's leave the drums
a solo for another day

and pray in thanks for
silent
night
