The oddest and - at over 560 million years in age - oldest #fossil featured in this #AdventCalendar is Fractofusus misrai from #Newfoundland 🇨🇦. This specimen in the #RoyalOntarioMuseum is from #MistakenPoint, one of the sites preserving the #Ediacaran #biota, the term for some of our planet's oldest #multicellular #fossils. Lots of questions remain about these ancient enigmas, among them, were #Ediacarans #animals or members of a different branch of the tree of life?

@conradhackett Why are #trees categorized as physical "#things"? Even #scientists know that they belong to the kingdom #Plantae and are living beings and #multicellular #organisms (besides other #life forms and kingdoms such as #animals or #fungi).

It's a bit weird that category of "New Age". Also because they apparently did not interview indigenous people.

The transition from #unicellular to #multicellular #life was one of a few major events in the history of life that created new opportunities for more complex biological systems to evolve.

According to a study from 2019, experimental populations evolved multicellular structures not observed in unselected control populations.

I was under the impression that multicellularity may have posed an #evolutionary bottleneck. Clearly that is not the case.
