I finally watched the 1974 Albert Finney version of . Then today I rewatched the 2010 Suchet version.

Finney's Poirot is a goofy one-dimensional cartoon, but Suchet's, in that specific film, is uncaring, antagonistic, and unlikable all the way through, even though the performance is great. It feels unlike every other Suchet portrayal in the series.

It is arguably a better film but it makes Suchet's Poirot feel so out of character that it's kind of gratingly unpleasant.

Which leaves me conflicted about Lumet’s 1974 . There’s something arch and ironic and mocking about it, and I get that, it’s there in the source material, but it leaves me most of the time not caring one wit about the whole thing.

I’m a big fan of the 2010 “Poirot” series adaptation of . A stellar cast, with a darkness & gravity to it that I thought the material warranted, especially Poirot’s conflict over how to handle the consequences. imdb.com/title/tt1554113/?ref_

@stephen interesting!- my kids have just had a mini whodunnit season starting with , then they slid into the inferior modern and because they were more familiar with the actors and the modern production values were more palatable to them, culminating with a viewing of last night- maybe I can tempt them in watching the 70s and 80s versions now that their interest has been stoked!

Our second Christmas movie today, as in a movie for Christmas rather than set at, was my all time favourite Christie movie, Murder on the Orient Express (1974). It just cannot be beat. Yes, I prefer Ustinov as Poirot over Finney, but for sheer pacing, script and the wonderful trainyard shots it just cannot be bettered. Add in a genuine all-star cast, and it’s movie heaven.
