“Allow me, in conclusion, to congratulate you warmly upon your sexual intercourse, as well as your singing.”

The letter – as imagined by her pupils – from Miss Jean Brodie to Mr Lowther, the music teacher. From Muriel Spark’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

“What hash Spark’s characters make of those eternal debates over unlikable characters or unlikable women. These women aren’t unlikable, these women are monstrous… Spark looks at her women like a wolf.”

Finished re-reading The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. My experience of reading is still that The Driver's Seat and The Girls of Slender Means got under my skin, but Brodie and A Far Cry from Kensington didn't. I'm really not sure why.

@InBabel Both Iris Murdoch and Muriel Spark -- both Queens, as far as I'm concerned -- are criminally underread here in the States. But there's still so much vivacity in their work to get jazzed up over! Even on a reread!

@r_mccormack Ian is a marvelous writer and a wonderfully kind man. I've interviewed him a couple of times. Plus, he's the only person I've met who is as obsessed with Muriel Spark's THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE as me!
