"A woman is dead: a female lawmaker, similar to myself."
"That woman is dead because we weren't able to bring her to Canada fast enough."
Heather McPherson,
Canadian MP.
Former female politician Mursal Nabizada was becoming desperate to flee Afghanistan – but foreign officials weren't responding to her calls.
"Mursal herself sent so many emails and no one got back to her. Until she lost her sweet life."

Given the chance to democratically elect female politicians, that is exactly what Afghans did.
69 women were elected as representatives in the Afghanistan government in 2019.
28% of the politicians in Afghanistan were women. That's the same percentage of women as there are in U.S. Congress.
Afghanistan was making real progress before the Taliban took over. The Taliban are desperate to make them forget that. We can't let the Taliban make them forget that.
In Afghanistan, authorities are no closer to solving the mystery of who shot and killed former female politician Mursal Nabizada last Saturday.
In other news, Mursal Nabizada was one of the 69 women democratically elected to government in 2019. To the Taliban, who love erasing history, she was a very unwelcome reminder of how mainstream female participation in political life in Afghanistan had become just before they took over.
Afschuwelijk. 💔

Mursal Nabizada, 32, was one of the few female MPs who stayed in Kabul after the #Taliban seized power in August 2021.
Her brother and a second security guard were wounded in the attack on Sunday.
Former colleagues praised Ms Nabizada as a fearless champion for #Afghanistan who turned down a chance to leave the country.

It's not yet clear who is responsible for the killing of Mursal Nabizada, who was one of several democratically elected female politicians in Afghanistan until the Taliban took over last year.
It is very clear that as a reminder that Afghanistan had a democracy, and that women were active participants, she was anathema to the Taliban.

This shot is by Afghan photographer Shah Marai, circa 2008.
The dye on the woman's finger indicates that she has just voted in the elections.
I will post this here in memory of Mursal Nabizada, the former politician in Afghanistan who was murdered last night.
Never forget that women and democracy are what the Taliban are most afraid of because they know that this is what will destroy them.
