#Iditarod all but two of the teams are now safely into Nome; still on the trail are Jed Stephenson and his 10 dogs with 8 miles to go; and Jason Mackey and his 5 with 16 miles to go. Two dudes, 15 dogs, and 15ish miles ...

#Iditarod update:

Joanna Jagow's team should be next to finish, they have 22 miles to go. Then Bailey Vitello's team, not long after.

Then there's a gap to Gerhardt Thiart and Bridget Watkins' teams, on the way to Safety with about 55 miles left.

Finally, Jed Stephenson and Jason Mackey have made it to White Mountain - 77 miles to go.

I'm really hoping Jason gets the Red Lantern but when he does I will be a weepy mess.

Jagow has 77 miles to go, and Mackey has 98.

It won't be long until the Red Lantern arrives in Nome.

#Iditarod Nic Petit and team arrived in Nome at about 2am local time to earn 17th place in reality (behind KattiJo Deeter*) but 16th place (ahead of her) if you believe the trackibois.

#Iditarod update - overnight the teams of Eddie Burke, Jr., Matt Failor, Mille Porsild and Wade Mars arrived safely in Nome. Huzzah to them! 🎉 🎉 💞 💞

Eddie is (I think) the first rookie to finish this year, so he'll win Rookie of the Year, but imho he should give that prize to Hunter Keefe ...

And Hunter's is the next team in line - currently resting between White Mountain and Safety, 50 miles from Nome.

#Blowhole is a geographic feature on the trail, and also the name of a dog who was running with the team that year.

#Iditarod news - Ryan and team are between White Mountain and Safety, with 40 miles to go to Nome.

This stretch can be very hazardous in bad weather, and there's a special weather statement for the area forecasting gusty winds developing tonight through Wednesday.

Hopefully the lead teams can get to Safety before the winds get bad, and the others can hang out in White Mountain until the weather clears.

Monday morning #Iditarod report -
the three leaders (Redington, Kaiser, Diehl) are solidifying their positions to win - Ryan has only 127 miles to go on what has been a spectacular race for his team.

The read lantern is through Eagle Island checkpoint. Maybe that means everyone still in the race will finish at the burled arch!

Fingers crossed - all these humans and doggos deserve a happy and successful finish...

you guys Nic's team just arrived in Unalakleet as I tuned into the live feed and I have learned that when you're an #Iditarod dog team and you park at a checkpoint you have to (a) shake yourself out very thoroughly (b) bite the snow and (c) rub in the snow and generally be giddy and silly.

They're such good doggos.

Sunday morning #Iditarod - the three leading teams are Ryan Redingon, Pete Kaiser and Richie Diehl, and Ryan has made it to Unakleet (they've gone 737 miles and have 261 to go). Jesse Holmes team, who had been way ahead, have now acknowledged the need to rest and are in a very respectable 11th place, just ahead of Nic.

Unakleet is where we can order pizzas for mushers from a local shop - they bring the pies on a snow machine...

Oh no Brett Sass has scratched at the #Iditarod today at Eagle Island checkpoint, apparently to take care of some kind of health issue (of his, not the dogs', and not an injury or illness associated with the trail?)

It's of course a good decision for him and his team, just heartbreaking to have made it that far and have to give up now.

Let's send lots of virtual hugs and best wishes to Sass and his doggos!
