I don't use the phrase, "This would never have happened if was still alive," but today came pretty close. I haven't used the Monterey much, but I was checking out new music and stumbled on this horror show. See the tile in the upper-left? It's now animated for no good reason. It's damned distracting and I can't find a way to turn it off. Apparently, it's been around for months. The second animation loop is jerky. Thankfully Steve can't see these abominations.

If you miss the original scroll wheel interface from the original iPod, take a look at tannerv.com/ipod/. It integrates with Apple Music and Spotify Premium. Tip: to get it working, you need to use the scroll wheel and scroll down to the Sign In option. Here’s a video showing how it looks with my Apple Music library.

I don't know what it will take to get this sync to work correctly. My only suggestion is to fire Tim Cook and replace him with someone who values quality as much as shareholder value. Yeah, I know—money will trump quality every time.

When I worked at a telecom software company, a programmer would get into serious trouble if they issued an error message that wasn't fully documented as to the origination, why it occurred, and what the reader of the message was supposed to do to correct the error.

Then there's Apple's error messages. About a third of the music tracks failed to be added to iClown Music. For some reason. So now what?

Going to splash out on Andrew Wang's Flip Sampler app at some point. £10. I usually find these apps confusing since the controls have to fit on a phone screen, but I appreciate AW and I'm a sucker for a cheap synth.

Today I want to tell you about the Linux app .

It's an app that plays music from YouTube, without the video. It has built in search, and only shows music results – and skips non-music parts of results*. It also lets you create playlists and add new tracks to your queue**.

You can import playlists from YouTube, and save tracks or whole playlists locally. And it can automatically add similar songs at the end of the queue.

All in all it's just a very useful, very simple and straight to the point streaming music player. And it's all free, in both senses of the word.
