Another album from my 2013 iPad, and this time it is Huun-Huur-Tu's "The Orphan's Lament" and here's a sample from that time:

Back in the late 70s I was in a band with a brilliant friend, now passed and sorely missed, who was studying voice at the music school and he turned me on to #TuvanThroatSinging and ever since I've always had Central Asian music in my collection. I got to see them back when they were presenting the traditional Tuva forms.

Back to my 2013 iPad's music. This time it is The Decemberists' The Hazards of Love. I found a video of what purports to be the first show:

I don't know the band very well, but I have place in my heart for these "operas" fondly recalling them from my youth. Back in the 90s three of the bands in my circle would join up to write and perform a short opera each summer at a local festival. That was a lot of fun despite me really not being a performer.
Yet again going through my 2013 iPad, and playing the tunes I was listening to back then. This album is from 1990 but I didn't discover it until much, much later, like 2010. We always liked Yo La Tengo around here, and this is a nice collection of covers they did of older tunes that they loved. If you know the band's recordings this is a little different and unexpected. To me, at least. It is a fun little collection and I'm glad to reencounter it.
Continuing my exploration of my ten year old iPad that I dug out when my music system broke. #MusicFromTenYearsAgo
Today I finally dug into the #RandyNewman collection titled "Guilty" and recalled how much I love his nostalgic yet acid take on America via music. I recall being a preteen and listening to my mom's records and being totally taken with "Sail Away" and how he played with people's weird biases and expectations.
But "Lonely at the Top" is the one I picked:

Once again going through my 2013 iPad, and playing the tunes I was listening to back then. I found this much older tune by Peter Gabriel with Sinéad O'Connor. I got to see them when #WOMAD came through here around '89. It was when she was getting a lot of crap for her SNL appearance and he castigated the fools who booed her. Despite that, great show, and she won over the crowd, too!
Meandering through my 2013 iPad, and playing the tunes I was listening to back then, I found this K T Tunstall gem:

Now I'm kicking myself and wondering why this is the only album of hers that I have. I need to make time to follow up on what she's done since then! Geez, I love this song, I put it on repeat this morning and it got me moving...
