A little late but it's still Friday, so my selection this week is from Alsarah & The Nubatones, a cut called Soukoura. Alsarah, or Sarah Mohamed Abunama-Elgadi, is a Sudanese-American singer/song writer and part of THE NILE PROJECT which uses music and song from cultures who live adjacent to the Nile River to teach about water sustainability. Enjoy

#BlackFriday #MusicFromTheMotherland #BlackTwitter #diaspora @blackmastodon@a.gup.p The artist this week is Diogal Sahko. Here's Last FM's post on him: "Diogal Sakho was born in 1970 in a small Senegalese village. He is a member of the Lébou clan of fisherman from the Senegalese Coast. As a child, Diogal would listen to his uncles playing music. He taught himself to play guitar and soon began composing his own songs." The cut is SORE.

Feeling political today...wonder why? But I'm also just disgusted with my country persons. Here's Asa, whom I have posted before with FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN. Take what you can from it.

I've been on the road this week so haven't been able to jump on to much. Here's a quick link to Viviane Chidid, one of the pop Queens of Senegal, and sister-in-law to Youssou N'Dourt. In the video she starts off in more village type attire with an elaborate headdress that looks fulani. It has coins and amber pieces embedded. She then moves to more modern attire. Enjoy. https://youtu.be/aIsaaSHhdXY

Just a quick post today. In light of the news yesterday that Mdou Moctar aand. his band are stuck in the US because of the coup in Niger, I'm posting another song from them. I remember when the Malian artists got stuck all over the world and it makes my heart sick. Two links below: to video TALA TANNAM and second to his GoFundMe page. Help if you can.

Interspersed among the idyllic rural countryside are scenes of men fighting each other, burning villages, and young people without enough food. Problems that plague most of Africa. I don’t speak Swahili, but it seems pretty clear he is singing about stopping violence and moving towards peace. In the last frame he shows two men shaking hands with each other. Enjoy. 2/2 https://youtu.be/detUo04lkGI

Sorry I missed y’all last week , but went to the beach. Back on track – this wee’s pic is the last one from Dhow Countries Music Academy. It’s not Taarab, but it’s one of the bands they support. The artist is called Tofa Boy. He plays the flute, a ukelele (?) and he sings. In the video he is showing rural scenes while he is seated on a donkey that include landscape and a couple of working folks. 1/2

#BlackFriday #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #MusicFromTheMotherland #diaspora @blackmastodon The song is about an age old story. Woman falls for charming man driving a motor cycle. She ends up pregnant and he can’t be bothered with that. The band sings her tale in a variety of settings. They are dressed in a fascinating array of colorful clothing. In the end the woman has her baby the child grows up and life goes on. 2/2

#BlackFriday #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #MusicFromTheMotherland #diaspora @blackmastodon Last week I posted some music from Taarab music from Zanzibar. I decided to look into the Dhow Countries Music Academy which is making sure Taarab music stays alive. There were a couple of bands on their site they seemed interesting. The one I’m featuring today is Siti & The Band which is a woman led band that fuses Taarab with more modern urban sound. 1/2

#BlackFriday #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #MusicFromTheMotherland @BlackMastodon The Dhow Countries Music Academy is teaching young people to play the music and it is often accompanied by Swahili poetry. The instruments are an accordion (!), a violin, or a string-like instrument similar to a zither. You can definitely hear the Arab influence in it. The singer has a great voice. https://youtu.be/VDBF3LxKzGA

#BlackFriday #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #MusicFromTheMotherland #diaspora @BlackMastodon I've been to three East African countries in my travels, but unlike West Africa, I don’t know the music on the other side of the continent. I saw a documentary recently on Zanzibar and it featured a music called "Taarab," which was created in the 1880’s. It blends Omani, Indian, and African cultures together. Thought to be dying old as “old people’s” music, it seems to be making a comeback. ½

Today's African music post is from an old veteran musician, Boubacar Traoré, a self-taught guitarist from Kayes, Mali. He’s been making music since Malian independence. This song is from the [karkar] album. It was the first of his music that I ever heard many years ago, but still to this day, when I need to find peace, I play it. Enjoy.

#BlackFriday #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #MusicFromTheMotherland #diaspora Hi folks. Today I'm sharing music from Rokia Traorè. She's Malian from a well-to-do family. Her parents are diplomats. So, when she decided she not only wanted to sing, but sing traditional Malian songs, it didn't go over well. But she stuck to her path. Some of her music is more accessible to western ears than others so I'll link M'Bifo first. This is from one of her early albums:

So here's some Garifuna music that developed in Central America (Guatemala Honduras and Belize) from African, Caribbean and Indigenous traditions. The video shows children making music and dancing, Enjoy. https://youtu.be/_KgzUkucqII

Hey folks. It's FRIDAY!!! We need some celebration music today because its Friday and because the grifter-n-chief finally got indicted. Here's a little dance music from Orchestra Baobab, a Senegalese band which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020. Some of the musicians are from what was Star Band, which is where Youssou N'Dour used to be. Notice the melange of diasporic sound.

The video has animated cartoon images of the things that are important to him superimposed on images of Tuareg people. There’s a black bird with a band of white plumage around it’s neck, the teapot, the band and Mdou on a camel. The second clip is a composite of the three days of rehearsal and the impact it had on the people in the neighborhood. People of the Sahel love music and make a party anywhere! 3/3

COVID quarantines his band before they started rehearsing for a new album. The producers decided to travel from Europe to Niger, but it was too dangerous to go to Agadez because of the jihadists and Boko Harem, so they all met up in Niger’s capital, Niamey. The band rented a house and rehearsed outside in the courtyard. This first cut, called, Chismiten, is from the new album. 2/3
