One of the best parts of Apple’s Classical App is the Story of Classical series. It takes a unique angle as every episode links together the lives of those musicians that overlapped from one era to the next and so stays away from some of the more rote stories. I found the series refreshing and I was introduced to new artists that I now love. Particularly from the modern and contemporary eras. #classicalmusic #apple #musichistory

The great Otis Redding was born on this day September 9, 1941. In 1967, he performed with many other acts in a momentous music festival that would shape future music festivals. It was stated by many, that his amazing performance at the festival had the loudest crowd reaction by far. Sadly, only a few months later he would die in a plane crash.
Can you guess where this music festival took place?

It's too busy to make sense of it with all the data "shown" but by turning some of it off you can see what the points of reference were for those guys in New York and Philadelphia in the 1910s-20s who had been from this region of Southeastern Europe of the late 19th century. Some people had a very "local" mentality whereas others looked very far to the east or north from their birthplace for their musical references.

One of my latest efforts 😏 I got the idea from a friend Gabe who made a map of Russian Empire #klezmer stuff from the An-Sky expedition, so playing around with Felt (a new mapping site someone on here suggested) I came up with this map of the birthplaces of American klezmer recording artists of the golden age and what place names they used in their recordings.

Browsing old #newspapers in the #BritishNewspaperArchive and finding a very intriguing J.G. Yung #accordion performer and piano etc tuner popping up frequently in the #ScottishBorders in the latter half of the 19th century (1850s onwards). A bit of genealogical digging finds he was born in #Darmstadt, #Germany, and died in #Hawick in 1903. I may well pull together the various references into a more scholarly article. #squeezebox #Scotland #music #MusicHistory #HistoryOfMusic #Genealogy #BNA

There is a new documentary on #WayneShorter, but I will not be seeing it as it is on Amazon. I severed all ties with #Amazon some time ago. Helping the rich get richer does nothing to curb the extremes of #capitalism. The Wayne Shorter documentary was produced by Brad Pitt of all people. So, it is not even as though #jazz historians were complete in control here. Watching this #documentary just helps the rich get richer. I recommend not seeing it. https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/aug/28/wayne-shorter-saxophone-zero-gravity-amazon @jazz #MusicHistory

Pay attention to the WHERE right next to the WHEN, things get more interesting. You can mark those historical moments by eras where music has been confined to a small region and then suddenly broke out of it. Brooklyn and hip hop. The UK brought American rhythm and blues back to us in the form of the English Invasion. That 90s sound was all marked by the West Coast, mainly Seattle. Disco made a huge comeback in the 2010s and hardly anyone even noticed. Gaga did it.

Certainly a niche scholarly topic about #klezmer but the Klezmer Institute put up a page about the project I've been working on a bit this year. It's still basically in the exploratory stage but it's aiming to develop an informed framework to try and publish some of the #JewishMusic found in the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine.
