This weekend I finally reassembled my vintage radio-turned preset drum machine (which I dubbed the #RadioRhythmAce) with added PCM5102-based line out and servo-based rhythm dial.

As I also kinda finished my modded Radio Shack delay, I had to try them out together.

I even managed to put the #RadioShack delay back together, now sporting a giant delay time and a slightly smaller feedback knob.

There's also a (non-visible) switch to make the delay output wet only, but that is a bit noisy and generally a little unpredictable.

I can fully recommend the delay/feedback mods though!

If using slightly less drastic settings and running the output through some gentle noise reduction and a tiny bit of reverb the #RadioShack delay can actually sound quite sweet too!

Sorry about the mediocre playing - piano isn't exactly my forte.

For the delay time mod I replaced jumper JP3 (which is in series with the original "delay" fader) with a 1MΩ variable potentiometer, giving me a huge
delay time (but of course it gets pretty noisy).

For the feedback mod I used a 100kΩ pot instead of R21.

This means that when turned fully anticlockwise there is nearly any delay at all (as the original resistor was 18kΩ), and when turned fully clockwise things go pretty intense!

I added a feedback pot to my #RadioShack "Reverb" (it really is a delay) unit.

In this quick demo I am running a Korg MS-10straight into the unit's mic input and just manipulate the delay time and feedback knobs.

The resulting bass is quite gnarly in places...

I did finally get my #RadioShack delay wired up too, but couldn't figure out what my 15-year-old mods were supposed to do.

So I took it apart and tried out the simplest mod possible: I added a 1MΩ variable potentiometer in series with the delay fader, giving me super long, but super noisy delays.

The high-pitched whine is a bit of a pain, but I love the nearly ring-mod-type sound when slowing things right down.

Tonight I've been playing with using a servo to revive the vintage radio's station dial and turn it into Radio Rhythm Ace's rhythm selector display.

NB: I only programmed in a few rhythms, and they are subject to change.

Also, note to self: Next time EAT before creating the dial - it's Merengue not meringue! 🍙 👨‍🍳

@etherdiver Could be the systems. Try listening to a similar track from one of your heroes on them and see if it sounds like arse.

If that track sounds good on all those systems, there might be some annoying bs that you'll have to hunt down. Nothing worse than sweeping with a notch filter for hours, but someone has to do it. Might as well be us :)
