Year after year I feel...unnerved in quite a few #school buildings in the #unitedstates as they truly feel like prisons, both in their design and how some are run.

Now add in near constant surveillance, scanners, data tracking, police in every school and, at least in my district, a code red trigger around the neck of every teacher that pings your exact location in the building.

While any one of these by themselves wouldn't necessarily be terrible, combined they send an unnerving message to everyone involved in the education process in my mind.

Everyone I've brought this up to is either resigned or mentions private schools, as if that isn't ignoring the reality of most US students, particularly minorities and low SES ones. I wish I could see a...future past this, but everything I think of I can see no political will behind actually making changes.

I'm not hopeless by any means. But am I mad? Is this normal and I'm the one out of sync? Is it truly necessary and I'm just an idealist?

I really hope not.

Monday
The start of a whole new week.
Or maybe not.
Confusion, and dilemma, seems to have resulted from the birth of a brand new word "weekend", in the late 1870s, after which a new week started on Monday.
This system is why most diaries that are week to view turn to a new page and a new week after Sunday.
However in America they seem to cling to Sunday being their first day of the week, though confusingly they do call Monday their first working day of the week.

Tonight has been silent indeed, for I succumbed to the urge to sleep at about 6pm - and only just woke up. Sleep is an odd thing, you fall into it quite without knowing, and may never wake again. I often wonder, after a particularly lucid dream, whether if we did not, that would become our new lives.
And I am reminded of someone who pondered are our dreams really our lives - and our lives our dreams....

Turns out we both thought of each other as a friend who had a successful life. I can envy some of what she had, and she can envy some of what I did or tried to do.

We both felt we have been lucky in our parents, and maybe we both needed to hear that from each other. Because I haven't been feeling like I did well lately. The Venn right now is so complicated.

True friends are gold threads in the tapestry we weave of life.

Toot number 40 here at my new home instance - and yet inside of me I still remain in limbo.
I have not tooted so much here, and certainly not on a daily basis.
For one thing, this is a smaller instance than home.social so everything I feel is more openly visible, and that is a scary thought.
And secondly, at this moment, I do feel somewhat of an imposter, for I am not actually out on the road that will take me to my future - though I long so much to be..

I am the only one awake right now.
Most mornings, when I wake, as my eyes become accustomed to the dimness, but before my brain can cope with finding the kettle, let alone making coffee, I sit, and I wonder at just what I would do if the word awake was the word alive.
Would I sit here forever, too scared to move?
Would I continue to look outside the window at a world I seldom get to touch?
Or would I be brave, take the chance and seize my freedom?

Friday night, always hectic.
The solution, of course, is to do more earlier in the week, before I am totally burned out.
But there is something deeply satisfying in having but an hour to do three hours work in, and fitting it in.
Not perfectly, for nothing ever is.
But just the finishing, sometimes, is the most perfect thing there is in the whole wide world...
And now the weekend can spread itself out like untrod snow all the way before me

I intend to continue to journal something, every day, even if other things I enjoy way less keep getting in the way and my pleasure is reduced to a tiny random musing.

Today I planned to start to transfer some of my favourite home.social toots into this feed. Hopefully some of yours will be there, too.

i will hopefully get back to nerd-ing over the following week (holidays)

i got `spectrwm` running on my alpine install, but, in a moment of weakness, i used `setup-desktop` to get X running and now my package list has gone 📈
not really sure how to go about stripping it either. might mess around with it. if nothing else, it's not like the install was difficult so i could always revert.. but that's just effort ._.

i'll post if i get it working i guess :P
