While it's not the new #MUTCD, @Streetsblog has coverage of the new #PROWAG guidelines for urban design: https://usa.streetsblog.org/2023/09/06/american-streets-may-soon-get-their-first-accessible-design-standards-from-the-feds
RT @schlthss: The #MUTCD signal warrant system - made up by a bunch of dudes in a room in the 1930s- is not an appropriate decision making tool in a #SafeSystem people first world.
RT @nerd4cities@msdtn.social The most commonly applied traffic engineering methodology says you should not put a pedestrian signal here unless there are already at least 20 pedestrians crossing. But people are never going to cross here unless there’s a signal. It’s like a traffic engineering zen koan
@jcriecke
Dunno!
The proposed changes for the 11th edition of the #MUTCD included a whole lot of thigns: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/12/14/2020-26789/national-standards-for-traffic-control-devices-the-manual-on-uniform-traffic-control-devices-for
But they also received 17k+ comments on that proposal, and probably made revisions in response to those comments, so no one is sure what they'll do.
A wishlist for the new #MUTCD, via @Streetsblog and #nacto https://usa.streetsblog.org/2023/08/16/six-changes-to-look-out-for-in-the-next-edition-of-the-mutcd
In West Virginia, theoretical gores are marked with hatches, whereas in the neighboring state of Ohio, they use chevrons. Though I’ve travelled to several other states since becoming interested in highway infrastructure, I’ve only recently put two and two together and realized that West Virginia is actually the outlier in using hatches! Though the #MUTCD allows only either chevrons or no markings, the West Virginia Department of Transportation’s Standard Detail TEM-1 (Detail A shown) explicitly calls for diagonal lines. #roadgeek #roadsign
The new #MUTCD is late: https://usa.streetsblog.org/2023/07/03/the-mutcd-update-is-late-and-while-we-wait-people-are-dying
The rumor mill says that they received a lot of feedback from safe streets people, and I hope they're making revisions to suit. But I'm worried it'll arrive too late for #Columbus' Bikeways and Micromobility Plan Update later this summer.

@transbay I am sure the #TrafficEngineers have tried everything in the manual to move more cars and wish very hard that would get them out of the way of the bus instead of create additional traffic. #InducedDemand When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a thumb. #MUTCD

These “to request green wait on 🚲” signs have to be one of the most unintelligible in the MUTCD. It really needs another sign to explain it. I’m finding it weird that US sign standards don’t differentiate their audiences. Who is this sign for? Should drivers wait on 🚲 or is this just for people on bikes? #mutcd #signs #BikeTooter #Provincetown

I'd just like to point out that the citation style guide for the American Medical Association refuses to acknowledge the #MUTCD as a valid reference.
Okay, we had some good guesses, and @HereToChewGum more or less got it. What they have in common is that they are part of the "non-vehicular warning signs" in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices #MUTCD So if you ever see a warning sign for, say, snakes, turtles, or goats, those are not compliant!!! https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/htm/2009/part2/fig2c_11_longdesc.htm

Offset intersections can pose unique challenges to designers. What do you think about the one that they've done here?

The most interesting part of this article for me was the history of the "Clearview" #font causing problems because highway signs then had to be larger and more expensive to readable.

New post: Driving across America, one thing will stay the same from Maine to California: the signs you pass on the highway. That's because America’s roads and highways have a big, fat style guide. #MUTCD https://www.beautifulpublicdata.com/the-style-guide-for-americas-highways-mutcd/

One thing that were really lacking in the industry at the moment are the standard details for safer and superior cycling infastructure. These are the building blocks that young and eager engineers can use to upgrade our roads and streets.

After a couple of months of sending #Columbus increasingly-detailed descriptions of the problem, with recommendations for solutions drawn from a layman's understanding of the ODOT Multimodal Design Guide and #MUTCD, they've given in, and will make changes to the #Intersection of Hudson and North 4th. #success #VisionZero #StreetDesign #Intersections

Today, from the "doesn't really matter because they're never used" department...
I think that U.S. #Metric speed limit #Signs should have a red ring around the number, even though the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices says that the ring should be black.
It's still a #Regulatory sign with the red ring, and it would stand out a lot more.
